TEACHING

In my teaching, I take a participatory learning approach, in which students are encouraged to actively grapple with material rather than merely absorbing the instructor's lecture. This includes in-class problem sets, demonstrations of linguistic phenomena and language disorders, and group interaction. The learning occurs in both directions: from teacher to student, and from student to teacher. Focus is placed both on ensuring students learn specific concepts, but also exploring avenues of the topic that they find interesting.

Teaching is not just about formal topics - it is about outreach about the scientific study of language. I have also given introductory lectures about language science to visiting high school and middle students. Finally, I have learned much about how to communicate effectively in a learning environment through teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, which presented difficult challenges and afforded important lessons.
